About the Irish Memory Orchestra
The Irish Memory Orchestra, founded by Dave Flynn, is the first and only orchestra in the Western world to play exclusively by memory. It has succeeded in breaking down barriers by removing sheet music from the stage, thus opening access to musicians and instruments not usually found in orchestral music.
Established in 2012, the IMO has performed on the global stage, from London to Moscow, Clare to Korea with its ground-breaking and inclusive approach to orchestral music.
With a core of 20 world-class musicians, led by composer Dave Flynn, conductor Bjorn Bantock and orchestra leader Niamh Varian-Barry, this outstanding ensemble blends ancient Celtic instruments with orchestral strings, winds and brass, guitars and a jazz-tinged rhythm section.
The Orchestra seeks to work with exceptional musicians including those who wouldn't ordinarily have access to orchestral music. It is committed to unlocking the potential for performers from all backgrounds, to make incredible music together. Its robust commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Access has ensured it is a gender-balanced ensemble, giving opportunities to a wide cross-section of the community including blind/visually impaired musicians and people aged 10 to 90.
IMO Youth Orchestra and Choir
In 2021, the development of the IMO Youth Orchestra & Choir has been planned, with funding from the Arts Council Young Ensemble's Scheme. This innovative cross-genre youth orchestra was developed to showcase the incredible talent of young musicians with sight-loss, who rehearse and perform alongside their full-sighted peers. All of the musicians will perform from memory. Without the need for sheet music, the notion of disability recedes and enables each member of the orchestra to contribute on a level playing field.
IMO is now seeking to appoint a new CEO, on a part time or flexible basis, who is highly motivated and ambitious, to lead the organisation to a new phase of development and who will build on the success of its most recent achievements.
This role requires a flexible, dynamic senior manager who has excellent organisational, financial and project management skills and who is capable of leading and coordinating multiple teams and projects. The successful candidate will represent the IMO to all stakeholders including funders, industry, media, and audiences, therefore, excellent relationship building and management skills are essential.
The CEO will manage all aspects of the IMO's operations, working closely with the Artistic Director, to develop and implement the organisation’s strategy as well as deliver an annual programme of events. The CEO will also be responsible for developing the organisation’s profile on the national and international stage, finding opportunities for creative partnerships and funding for the future sustainability of the Company.
- Develop and implement a new strategic business plan with the artistic team, to build the IMO’s capacity into the post-pandemic era.
- Considerably develop IMO’s fundraising efforts through arts grants, corporate sponsorship, and private donations
- Work with the Artistic Director to develop an exciting 10th Anniversary season 2022/2023 and to ensure enough funds are raised to implement these plans
- Develop new business, explore alternative models and platforms for creation and to research and develop new markets and income streams.
- Report to stakeholders, including the Arts Council, on the impact of the IMO’s work
The candidate will have:
- A minimum of 10 years senior experience in Arts Management, preferably within classical and/or traditional music.
- Orchestra management experience would be highly desirable.
- Knowledge of the Irish music scene, particularly Classical and Traditional music / Arts and Disability / Youth Outreach.
- Proven experience in developing and delivering the strategic vision and mission for an organisation, with emphasis on income generation and development.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide the organisation, while strengthening and forging relationships both internally and externally.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Comprehensive financial experience with a track record delivering activities within existing budgetary constraints and leading on contract negotiation and conclusion.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work under pressure to multiple deadlines.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, networking, influencing and negotiation skills.
- Experience working with children and vulnerable adults is preferred. (Garda Vetting is required.)
- An appreciation and understanding for the value and importance of the mission of the Irish Memory Orchestra.
